PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He was a bright light for the Pirates for about two weeks.  John Nogowski cleared waivers and will report to AAA Indianapolis.

Picked up off waivers from the Cardinals after he was on St. Louis' Opening Day roster, Nogowski had 12 hits in his first 20 at bats from July 5-10.  The first baseman would continue with hits in 5 of his next 7 games.  He showed a feistiness and competitive spirit.  He also endeared himself to many fans using 'Born In The USA' by Bruce Springsteen as his walk-up song.

The 28- year-old designated for assignment after August 15 with only 3 hits and 2 RBI this month.

Also clearing waivers, 27-year-old Ka'ai Tom.  The 27-year-old lefty-hitting outfielder had the odd stat with the Pirates this year having more walks than hits.  His average just .152, but the on-base percentage .308.  Tom hit .213 playing a lot of games in May with a .344 OBP, but hasn't played since June 30.

Tom spent nearly a month on the injured list with a back injury.  He just recently went through a rehab assignment and now returns to AAA.

Right-hand pitcher Cody Ponce sent down to Indianapolis.  In four games in August, Ponce was 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA.  The 6'6", 255-pounder was the Brewers second round pick in 2015 and acquired in the Jordan Lyles trade.

After a near .500 month in July (11-14), the Pirates have two wins in 17 games in August.  They are 8-23 in the second half of the season, coming off a 15th straight loss to the Dodgers.  They continue on the road in St. Louis on Friday.
