PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – An update Sunday afternoon as the Pirates placed third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist strain.

Manager Derek Shelton confirmed the X-rays on Hayes left hand were negative, but the MRI showed some inflammation.

"We think the prognosis is quite good," said GM Ben Cherington during his show on the Pirates Radio Network and 93.7 The Fan. "It was just sore enough that we felt the right thing to do was to put him on the IL. We didn't feel like he needed to rush back. All the tests look good."

"We will miss him. He's an important part of our team."

Pirates have added infielder Wilmer Difo from the Taxi Squad. Difo had to be added to the 40-man roster, so the Pirates released right-hander Tyler Bashlor.

Hayes injured his hand on the knob of the bat during a swing in the first inning on Saturday.  Hayes remained in the game for two more innings before being replaced.

The favorite for National League Rookie of the Year, Hayes is 1 for 5 to start the season, hitting a two-run homer in his first plate appearance of the season.

Pirates are not scheduled have an off day until Friday and then not again until April 19.
