Pirates starter and ace Mitch Keller says while it’s still early in the process a contract extension is being discussed.
“We’re working on it, we’re working on it,” Keller said on The Fan Morning Show Tuesday morning.
On Monday night, Keller pitched a complete game and helped the Pirates stop a seven-game skid.
Keller gave up four hits, one walk, struck out eight and kept Colorado off the scoreboard to improve to 4-1.
Keller is making over $2.4 million this year in his first year of arbitration and have two more seasons under Pirates control.
He tells Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson while they are talking, it’s early in the process.
“Nothing too extravagant going on just yet, just pretty early stages of it,” said Keller.
With the Pirates losing talent like Charlie Morton, Gerrit Cole and Tyler Glasnow over the past few years, locking up Keller would be a big win for the Pirates and another example of ownership showing fans they’re committed to the future.
