Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin after going 1 for 3 in his first rehab game with the AA Altoona Curve Sunday night. The expectation is Griffin will play Tuesday and Wednesday (all of minor league baseball has Monday off) and potentially Thursday with AAA Indianapolis and likely rejoin the Pirates, as Friday is the first day he can be activated off the injured list.
“It feels normal, that was the goal, when it felt normal, I was ready to be back in the game,” Griffin said courtesy of the Altoona Curve.
The 20-year-old dealt with a mouthful in a July 5 injury. It was called ‘left ring finger sagittal band tear’ that meant a torn tendon in his left hand. In his rookie season, Griffin had a .276 average with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, a .332 on-base percentage and a .736 OPS stealing 20 bases.
Griffin said he was just ‘super-happy’ to be back on the field. He felt like he was comfortable playing in the big leagues and spun it positive that this is a good test for him to see where he’s at mentally.
Now it's off to Toledo to join the AAA Indians for a couple of games and then likely in the lineup Friday as the Pirates host the Angels.
After winning the last two series on the road, the Bucs are six games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
“Just want to be in the fight with them,” Griffin said courtesy of the Altoona Curve. “They are grinding up there, I want to try and come in, I’ll be fresh and try to do my part to try to win games.”
