You may have noticed the Pirates celebrating big home runs and hits in the dugout with a construction cone.
It all started a few weeks ago when Fanatics started selling a Pirates shirt that said “Hoist the Cone.”
While there is currently no explanation on what the shirt means… it’s believed to be a typo. It may have meant to say “Hoist the Colors.”
According to MLB.com's Jason Mackey, outfielder Jake Mangum requested the cone on Tuesday.
Mangum told Mackey that since the Pirates have had ‘a lot of traffic’ lately on the bases (stranding 40 men on base so far this season), they needed a cone “to make sure they got home.”
The cone seemed to have worked, with the Pirates exploding for 8 runs after being shut out the night before.
Oneil Cruz, woke up, hitting two homers in the game, getting to wear the home run celebration welding helmet, a nod to the Steel roots of Pittsburgh.
