The Pirates have designated infielder Josh VanMeter for assignment, the team announced before their double header against the New York Mets.
Infielder Hoy Park is being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take VanMeter's spot on the roster.
In 67 games with the Pirates this season, VanMeter batted .187 in 171 at bats.
He struck out 45 times, walking 19 times with 32 hits, five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 14 RBI.
VanMeter was acquired in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks at the end of March for Pirates prospect pitcher Listher Sosa.
Park was batting .220 in 22 games with the Pirates before being sent to Triple-A Indianapolis on July 5.
He had 11 hits, two doubles and six RBI. He struck out 15 times with four walks.
Park is batting .236 in Triple-A this season in 78 games with 10 home runs, 34 RBI and 65 hits.
The Pirates also added left-handed pitcher Eric Stout to the roster as the 29th man for the double header.
