Pirates option Oviedo to Triple-A after rough return start

According to multiple sources, Pirates starting pitcher Johan Oviedo is heading back to Triple-A Indianapolis after a rough start Monday.

Oviedo only made it through one inning against the Giants giving up two hits and two runs while walking three and striking out three over 43 pitches.

It was his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in late-2023.

Sports writer Tommy Birch and others have confirmed right-handed relief pitcher Cam Sanders is being called up from Triple-A and will make his Major League debut.

Sanders has an ERA of 1.91 over 18 appearances in Double-A Altoona and 15 in Triple-A this season.

He’s 4-1 with 51 strikeouts and 0.97 WHIP over 42.1 innings pitched this season.

Drafted by the Cubs in 2018, Sanders signed with the Pirates in minor league free agency this past offseason.
