PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates did make a transaction during the Winter Meetings on Tuesday, signing minor league pitcher Elvis Alvarado as first reported by the Post-Gazette's Noah HIles.
The 25-year-old reliever threw 17.1 innings in the Dominican Winter League this season with 21 strikeouts to nine walks, a 1.04 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. In 175 career minor league games, the right-hander was 15-14 with a 4.25 ERA with 257 strikeouts, 135 walks and a 1.50 WHIP.
Last year in AAA Jacksonville (Miami Marlins), 3-4, 2.79 ERA, 71 strikeouts in 48.1 innings with a 1.46 WHIP while throwing a fastball that averaged 98 mph according to Alex Stumpf of mlb.com.
If he passes a physical, he will be added to the 40-man roster even as a minor league free agent.
