Pirates using draft to load up on pitching

In the first two days of the MLB Draft, the Pirates have made it clear that they are collecting arms.

The organization has drafted seven and a half pitchers over the first two days (third-round pick Jack Brannigan out of Notre Dame is a two-way player).

The Pirates first took RHP Thomas Harrington out of Campbell University 36th overall in the competitive balance round, followed by Hunter Barco out of the University of Florida in the second –round.

LHP Michael Kennedy out of Troy High School in New York went to the Pirates 110th overall in the fourth-round.

The club then took pitchers in the next four rounds, starting with Ole Miss junior Derek Diamond, who was not among MLB Pipeline’s top 250 prospects.

Baseball America did have Diamond ranked 210th. Diamond struggled with Ole Miss in 2022 with a 6.89 ERA.

In the seventh-round, the Pirates drafted J.P. Massey out of Minnesota. The 6’5”. 205lbs senior posted a 6.52 ERA last season for the Gophers going 2-8.

In the eighth, the Pirates took BYU junior Cy Nielson, who went 3-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 2022. In the ninth-round the Pirates selected Mike Walsh who posted a 4-2 record with an ERA of 5.68.
