Pirates sign RHP Po-Yu Chen, member of 2019 Taiwanese national team


PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) — The Pittsburgh Pirates added another new right-handed pitcher to the roster on Wednesday.

This time around, the Pirates have signed Po-Yu Chen as a nondrafted free agent.

Chen is 19 years old and hails from Taoyuan City in Taiwan.

Chen was a member of the 2019 U-18 world champion national team.

During the tournament, Chen started two games against Korea and Panama.

He also closed out the last 2.0 innings against the U.S.

Chen’s father, Ping-Nan, had a professional stint in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

The Pirates are now up to 48 players signed during the international signing period.
