According to Fan Pirates Insider Jason Mackey of the Post-Gazette, pitcher Mitch Keller is on his way back to Pittsburgh after being sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis in mid-June amid troubles on the mound.

In his 12 games for the Pirates before being optioned to Indy, Keller went 3-7 over 12 starts with a 7.04 ERA. He struck out 51 and walked 29 over that span giving up 37 runs (all earned).

The Pirates were really hoping 2021 would be the year Keller came into the role of the Pirates #1 starter, but has been wildly inconsistent while with the Major League club.

In Indianapolis, Keller made six starts over eight games going 1-1 striking out 39 and walking 13 with a 3.21 ERA in 28 innings pitched.

Keller was sent down to Indy to get back some confidence and accuracy with the Pirates believed facing Minor League hitting would do that.

It's not known when Keller will make his next start for the Pirates, but Sunday's pitcher against the Philadelphia Phillies is listed as TBD.
