A couple of big news items from the Derek Shelton show on 93.7 The Fan Tuesday.
The Pirates Manager says starting pitcher Martin Perez is going on the Injured List and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes will likely return Tuesday evening against Detroit.
Perez was taken out of Sunday’s game against Atlanta with a left groin injury.
The 33-year-old has started in 11 games this season and is 1-3 with a 4.71 ERA.
He has 46 strike outs over 57.1 innings of work.
Shelton says the Pirates are still waiting for more testing and they’ll have a better idea on the severity of his injury in the coming days.
Catcher Joey Bart was also injured during the game Sunday. He suffered a thumb injury. No word on the severity of Bart’s injury.
There is good news though.
“There’s a really good chance that you’re going to see Ke’Bryan tonight,” Shelton said.
Hayes was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 11 with a back issue.
The Pirates begin a two-game series against the Tigers in Detroit Tuesday with rookie sensations Jared Jones and Paul Skenes pitching in the series.
