The secret to Jared Jones' success? Pissed off pitching

LISTEN to Jared Jones on PM Team on 93.7 The Fan

22-year-old right-handed pitcher Jared Jones is pissed off, and that’s a good thing!

The rookie starting pitcher has only made seven starts in the Majors but is already making an impact and doing things on the mound few pitchers have done to begin their careers.

Jones already has 52 strike outs on the season. That’s good enough for fourth in all of baseball. His 0.78 WHIP is good enough for third.

Even more impressive, his 52 strikeouts are over only 41 innings pitched. Former Pirates pitcher Tyler Glasnow has 63 strikeouts already on the season but that’s over 50 innings pitched, an entire game more than Jones.

Talking to Andrew Fillipponi on Monday afternoon, Jones says he pitched pissed off.

“I’ve always been a pretty pissed off pitcher, just want at bats to end early and get out of the innings quick,” Jones said on The PM Team.

He has been incredibly accurate. On Saturday he pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and zero walks.

He’s also the first pitcher in over 120 years to strike out 50 batters and have five or fewer walks in his first seven starts.

So, what has he changed to become so dominant?

“Just stay in the zone, trusting my stuff in the zone,” said Jones.
