PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Ben Roethlisberger met with the media on Thursday, August 27 to wrap up another practice.
Specifically, Roethlisberger was prompted on his thoughts regarding rookies Chase Claypool and Alex Highsmith.
"Well, I always get caught trying to spread too much praise to rookies because I want them to sneak up on other people, but it doesn't look like Chase [Claypool] is going to be able to sneak up on anybody right now because people are talking about him and deservedly so."
This isn't the first person to start singing Claypool's praises, either.
In an earlier report from Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Claypool has been creating a name for himself already.
It's certainly encouraging, and it might be even more impressive seeing Claypool finding his stride since he was a Day 2 selection earlier in April.
Claypool was indeed the Steelers' first pick of the draft, but the Fighting Irish wide receiver wasn't a first-rounder.
Their 2020 first-round pick was sent to the Dolphins in the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade last fall, so the Steelers' 49th pick was their first choice of the year.
While second-rounders still come with high expectations, Claypool has the luxury of being the crown jewel of the 2020 draft class for Pittsburgh as an added bonus.
And the Steelers' 2020 Draft darling has caught Roethlisberger's attention.
'He's just making plays. I think the plays that he's making are impressive, but I think, to me, what's more impressive is that he doesn't ask a lot of questions, which means he knows his stuff. I can change a play with a hand signal or call a different play at the line of scrimmage, and he—I always check him like, 'Are you good?'—he's like 'I got it.'"
"I think that is very impressive from a quarterback perspective that as much as we've thrown at him, he's able to digest it. I'm not saying he doesn't make a mistake, but when he does make a mistake, he's not making the same mistake twice. I just think that's really impressive."
So Roethlisberger has made his opinion crystal clear in regard to Claypool, but what might speak the highest volumes is that he didn't even make mention of Alex Highsmith.
He must have been too impressed with the former Notre Dame receiver.
