Coach Tomlin opens up about selecting Pickett

Kenny Pickett being selected at the 2022 NFL Draft

PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) It's been a little over a week since the Steelers took Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett with their first round selection at the 2022 NFL Draft.

Since then the discussion has shifted to whether or not Pickett can be the Steelers next starting quarterback or if the job will be given to Mitch Trubisky.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin joined Ike Taylor and Mark Bergin on their podcast Bleav in Steelers and took it back to what it was like on draft day.

When Tomlin and the Steelers staff saw Pickett slipped all the way to 20, they didn't hesitate to make him their choice.

"We probably spent about 15 seconds on the clock," Tomlin said.

The Steelers knew exactly who they wanted and were shocked when he was still available.

The decision to draft Pickett was more than just him being a next door neighbor, however; according to Tomlin, having the close proximity was only a bonus.

"His tape said enough," Tomlin said. "But we knew so much beyond the tape… I watched that guy sit on that patio and watch us work for three or four years."

Tomlin would go on to say how easy of a pick Pickett was and that they didn't expect him to still be there at 20.
