PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – While the team prepares for the season opener next Sunday, a Steelers linebacker helped out Pittsburgh students during extreme temperatures in early September.
On Thursday a handful of city parks and recreation centers hosted students during remote learning at the school. Parents could drop their kids off and they would do their school day there. But there weren’t school lunches.
Steelers Alex Highsmith took care of that, through his foundation, he paid for all of the lunches for everyone in those buildings.
“I know with the storms and everything, some of these schools have been put in vulnerable positions,” Highsmith said. “Just being able to provide a meal for these kids in a time of need, just means a lot to me. I’m super grateful and honored to be able to do it.”
Last week at the Best of the Batch Foundation, Highsmith hosted a Back to School Bash providing free backpacks, school supplies, dinner, haircuts and more for kids in Homestead.
“Our main purpose (of the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation) is to make an impact in the next generation, our youth,” Highsmith said. "Making sure they get started the right way because a lot of these kids have big dreams, big goals in their lives. End of the day, it’s about doing great in school and starting the year off right is really important.”
