Howard ready to show Steelers fans he’s worth having

Steelers 2nd year QB thinks this preseason can be big for his career

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – At an event at the Bob O’Connor Golf Course set up to help kids play more golf Monday, the conversation with Steelers quarterback Will Howard turned to football. With mandatory mini-camp starting Tuesday, Howard still believes this can be a big season for him.

When the Steelers decided to bring back Aaron Rodgers for another season, any chance of Howard playing this year would seem to fade away, assuming all stay healthy. Even his shot to be the back-up is in question with a team decidedly talking about winning now having a veteran backup seems like the prudent move.

Yet Howard believes there is more.

“I know this is the year that I’m going to be able to go out there and hopefully get some great snaps in the preseason and show the fan base that I’m a guy that’s worth being around here for a while,” Howard told a couple of Pittsburgh reporters.

Along with competing with Mason Rudolph, Howard may be battling for a roster spot against the Steelers third-round pick, Drew Allar.

“You are just competing every day and trying to make yourself better,” Howard said. “At the same time that you are making yourself better, you are making those around you better. Right now, we are all trying to improve and be the best versions of ourselves.”

Throughout last season, Howard praised Rodgers for passing on knowledge and being willing to answer any questions he has. While wanting more, Howard practices, and competes, with people he likes and respects.

“I wouldn’t rather be in another quarterback room with a better group of guys,” Howard said. “It really is a special group of guys that I am blessed and lucky to go to work with every day.”

Golf with Us

Howard was joined by the First Tee Pittsburgh and Boys & Girls Club helping more than 50 children attending a clinic at The Bob O’Connor Golf Course. It’s part of the Golf with Us program sponsored by Bank of America that gives children ages 6-18 to play golf, and in some cases golf simulators, for $5. Monday, they practiced swinging, chipping and putting with Howard and golf instructors.

This program is nationwide and more than 170,000 youth have enrolled for the free, one-year membership.
