Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy has described Joey Porter, Junior’s contract situation as ‘at an impasse’.
“We are at an impasse right here and you got to respect that. Every one of us has a contract. The organization has beliefs. That’s kind of where we are,” said McCarthy.
The cornerback was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start Training Camp.
“You have to separate the business from the football,” said McCarthy. “Sometimes its easier than others. This is a challenge for both Joey and us because, you know, we’re a first-year staff . . . I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter.”
Porter is going into the last season of his rookie deal with both sides looking for an extension.
Porter’s value has increased significantly with a handful of cornerbacks in the NFL now making $30 million, or more, a year.
Historically, the Steelers don’t make deals during the season, so if a deal is going to get done, it will have to be before the season.
The Steelers have resolved contract disputes with players like T.J. Watt at the last minute, so there is still plenty of time for a deal to get done.
The Steeler could also place the franchise tag on Porter next season.
