The Steelers have been active at college pro days this week, taking a look at four quarterbacks up close, but a new mock from NFL Network doesn’t have Pittsburgh taking a QB.
In Daniel Jeremiah’s 3rd mock, since updated to 3.1 after the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to Miami, he has the Steelers taking a cornerback.
LSU Junior Derek Stingley Jr. is the projected pick for Pittsburgh at 20.
Jeremiah says that “This would be a fun fit in the Steelers’ secondary. When healthy and dialed in, Stingley is a top-five talent in this class.”
Stingley is 6-feet tall and weighs 190 lbs.
Stingley broke through in the 2019 season but in only 10 games in the past two years, he’s shown “flashes of his upside rather than sustained play,” according to the NFL’s scouting report on him.
The Steelers may be hesitant to sign a cornerback though. Their success at drafting a corner has not been good.
2016 first round pick Artie Burns was a bust, so was 2015 second round pick Senquez Golson. While this was before Mike Tomlin’s tenure the Steelers took Ricardo Colclough in the second round of the 2004 draft when Kevin Colbert was Director of Football operations.
The Steelers are also, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, interested in free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu (Honey Badger).
Fowler adds that the Steelers are also keeping an eye on Terrell Edmunds, after not picking up his fifth-year option last year.
Fowler says that the Steelers are also looking at former Dallas Cowboys free safety Damontae Kazee.
“He is known as a ball hawk who can play multiple spots,” Fowler says.
Other notable moves in the mock include Pitt QB Kenny Pickett going to New Orleans in at 18th overall and Malik Willis not being taken at all in the first round.
