PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Six days before the first game and no TJ Watt contract yet.

Steelers saying Monday only his status has not changed since training camp.  Translation, he continues to be with the team for individual drills, but is not practicing in team periods.

How much work would he really need in those periods is a matter of debate. Nearly the entire defense returns from the last game in 2020, so familiarity with teammates and the system is there. Having a veteran in Melvin Ingram helps with potential lack of snaps if he isn't ready.

Watt's teammates are publicly concerned with his lack of practice time.  Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler has even said he understands Watt's situation and wants him to get all the money he can.

Reports are Watt is looking for a record contract in terms of guaranteed salary.  Mostly in the past, players get their guaranteed money off a signing bonus.  It potentially made this a difficult negotiation.  Not only for Watt, but setting a precedent.

Steelers say Mike Tomlin will address the issue during his news conference on Tuesday at noon.
