REPORT-Steelers interviewing for new offensive position

Tom Arth with the Chargers
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and President Art Rooney both said they were willing to look at adding to their staff size this offseason. Not just replacing other coaches, but creating new positions. A first interview for a new position is happening.

NFL reporter Aaron Wilson says the Steelers are interviewing former Chargers assistant Tom Arth for a 'passing game position'. Currently there is not a job for passing game specialist or coordinator with the Steelers, Arth spent the past two seasons with Brandon Staley in Los Angeles as a 'passing game specialist'.

Arth would have worked closely with one of the best young quarterbacks in the game. Justin Herbert and the Chargers were fifth in the AFC in passing yards (4,312) and eighth in passing touchdowns (24) in 2023. In 2022, the Chargers were second in pass yards (4,791) and sixth in passing TD (26).

LA was his first professional coaching experience, Arth served as head coach of the University of Akron (2019-21), University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (2017-18) and John Carroll University (2013-16). Arth was two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

The Cleveland native set 18 school records over his playing career at John Carroll and named a consensus All-American his final two years. He was a backup to Peyton Manning with the Colts for three years (2003-05) with Tony Dungy as head coach. He also spent a training camp with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay in 2006 and played in NFL Europe, the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.
