PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He was instantly a Steelers fan favorite since his name was called outside of Acrisure Stadium in the third round of the NFL Draft. Iowa rookie Gennings Dunker, with the red-haired mullet, is also a team favorite, sure for some of his projectables on-field work at guard, but currently he sets the tone in daily offensive meetings.
With a joke.
And according to the most veteran player, he’s great.
“He’s got a responsibility every single day, he’s got to tell a joke up front, and he is phenomenal,” said Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. “From day one of training camp back in Latrobe, he’d go up there, put his little hand up, where he’s from. A little fun fact he’s started adding to it, which is great, I can’t wait for the fun facts every day. And then the jokes, and he’s about a 95% to the ones that hit.”
According to Rodgers, offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio was hoping it was just a one-off, or two-off, but no.
“Are we really going to do Gennings Michael Dunker every single day? Hell ya, we are doing it. Every single day.”
Others have tried it, but haven’t had the success like Dunker has.
“I think it’s just practice, telling jokes in the mirror and just trying new material,” Dunker told 93.7 The Fan.
The rookie said he’s not concerned about standing in front of the entire offensive group as a rookie, every day, and coming up with a funny joke.
“If it bombs, it bombs, you just got to go back to the drawing board I guess and come up with something the next day,” Dunker said. “I think it’s pretty fun. I always enjoy telling jokes. I think they’re funny. It makes me laugh before I even tell them.”
And he starts everyone’s day, 95% of the time, with a laugh.
“The delivery is absolutely spot on, it is unbelievable,” Rodgers said.
“We got the greatest joke teller in my 22 years in Mr. Gennings Michael Dunker. Every day, you don’t know what he’s going to say.”
