Steelers backup quarterback Mason Rudolph says his goal is to be the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 2022.

“That’s my goal, to be a starting quarterback in this league and for our team and I’m working toward that goal every single day,” Rudolph told reporters during OTAs on the South Side Tuesday.

Right now, Rudolph is the only quarterback under contract for the Steelers in 2022, after signing an extension this offseason.

Saying he wants to be the starting QB for Pittsburgh in 2022 doesn’t mean he knows something about Ben Roethlisberger that we don’t.

“I can only control myself and the way I prepare and the way I approach and the way I play in OTAs and in camp and that’s on the forefront of my mind,” said Rudolph. “I’m not worried about ’22 or anything like that, I’m trying to live in the moment and be the best I can for my team.”

While Rudolph is the apparent successor to Roethlisberger when he does retire, that isn’t a guarantee, a lot can change with Ben deciding to come back another year, the Steelers drafting/trading for a QB or one of his teammates in the QB room taking his spot (Dwayne Haskins and Josh Dobbs).

"I think you're always excited and looking forward to competition. Couple good players and good guys. It's competition, it makes everybody better," said Rudolph.
