Starkey: Aaron Rodgers doesn't need to play a snap in the preseason

Some people are gnashing their teeth over quarterback Aaron Rodgers not playing at all during the Steelers preseason.

It’s the first time in 20 years that a starting Steelers quarterback hasn’t received any playing time in the preseason.

Some people are concerned that the offense won’t be clicking on all cylinders when the regular season starts if they don’t get some preseason game work in.

But Joe Starkey says after 20 years in the NFL and four MVPs, Rodgers doesn’t see a snap, especially against down-the-line players.

“Do we actually think that by playing in a preseason game, against . . . a vanilla defense that’s not scheming to stop him, that that’s not going to make a huge difference when he goes into a loud stadium against a Jets defense that is scheming to stop him?” asked Starkey.

Starkey adds he is dreading the people that will come out and brining up Rodgers not playing in the preseason as the reason in the Steelers get off to a slow offensive start.

“Everybody’s going to be talking about, he should’ve played two series and thrown one pass against the Bucs in that second-to-last preseason game and we would’ve never seen an offensive performance this bad,” said Starkey, guessing how some fans will react if the offense stinks to start the season.

If Rodgers and the Steelers’ offense is bad when the games start to count, it won’t be because he didn’t hand off the ball twice against Carolina’s second-string defense.
