Steelers active finding receivers even without drafting one

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – If there was an area of need the Steelers missed in the draft, it was wide receiver. It doesn’t mean the position hasn’t been addressed to this point.

The biggest move is likely the biggest trade in terms of star value in the offseason, the Steelers trading their second-round pick to Seattle for receiver DK Metcalf and signing him to a new four-year extension. Not only does that add an established play-maker, but a physical force on the outside.

Monday, the Steelers added another veteran. 33-year-old Robert Woods reportedly signed a two-year deal worth $2 million. Known for his versatility, at this point he doesn’t do anything especially well, but can do a little of it all and is a willing blocker. He is also a willing leader who has played in a Super Bowl.

Woods, 6’, 193 pounds, started four of the 15 games he played with Houston last year with 20 receptions for 203 yards. Woods had a pair of 1,000-yard seasons with the Rams in 2018 and 2019, but hasn’t topped 570 yards in a season in the last four years. Overall Woods has played for four teams, a total of 12 NFL seasons with 683 receptions, 8233 yards, 12.1 yards-per catch and 38 touchdowns.

Memphis 6’2”, 225-pound receiver Roc Taylor was on many mock drafts on Day 3, but signed as an undrafted free agent. Taylor had 66 receptions for 950 yards and two TD last year at Memphis. In 2023, 1,083 yards and a 15.7 average with four touchdowns. He had five catches for 116 yards in the bowl game against West Virginia.

Ke’Shawn Williams is the smallest of the receivers at 5’9”, 189, also an undrafted free agent. He played in 59 games between Indiana and Wake Forest with 146 receptions, 1833 yards, 12.6 average, 10 touchdowns and returned 34 kickoffs with a 20-yard average. He had five receptions for 45 yards in the Hoosiers playoff game at Notre Dame.

The team re-signed receivers and special teamers Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek.

They also get the biggest question mark back in 2025. Roman Wilson came with a lot of promise from Michigan last year but injuries and issues understanding the offense derailed his rookie season. If the 5’10” second-year responds positively, it’s adding a third-round pick to the mix.

Speaking of responding, George Pickens and Calvin Austin are in the final years of their contracts. Money is on the line.

The Steelers are active at the position even if they didn’t select one in the 2025 Draft.
