LANDOVER, MD (93.7 The Fan) – A big smile came over Mike Tomlin’s face when he was asked about going for it on 4th and 1 with 1:02 to play and the ball at the Washington 49-yard line. The Commanders needed a field goal to win it. He was going for it, right? Not trying to just draw Washington offsides.
“We’ll never know, will we,” Tomlin said bursting into laughter.
The Commanders were out of time outs and the Steelers may well have been just working a count to try and draw Washington offsides. If they didn’t, they may have dealt with the penalty and punted it.
Steelers tailback Najee Harris was not going to incriminate his coach.
“I don’t have no comment off of that,” Harris said. “I have no comment off that.”
Then with a slyness Harris said ‘we were going to run it. We were really going for it.’
“You either take a chance or you don’t,” Harris said. “We took the chance. None of us were looking at each other like what the hell. We were looking like, let’s get this first down. Take the defense off the field, we get this first down and the game is over with.”
They would end up getting the first down as quickly into Russell Wilson calling signals, Washington jumped and the five-yard penalty ended the game.
“Russ’ hard count,” said Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth. “He has a really good cadence. He did a really good job to get them to jump offside.”
“It’s just trust,” Wilson said. “Trust in Coach Tomlin, what decision he wants to make and how we go about it. We had the mentality of making a play, depending on what we were going to do. I’m not going to tell you guys what we were going to do.”
Wilson then admitted he used a hard count to get them to go. He would then reiterate he wouldn’t say what they would have done if Washington had not jumped.
“What we were able to accomplish there was huge, obviously to get that first down,” Wilson said. “Just to celebrate together and know we won that game right there was huge.”
How many times do you see teams trying to do that same thing and how few times you see it work. Sunday it worked and the Steelers are 7-2.
