PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – While the Steelers don’t typically talk about specific players in the current NFL Draft, they did discuss one quarterback. Shedeur Sanders.
It was not that he was brought up in an opening statement, but when asked about Sanders, the Steelers, or at least Mike Tomlin, were ok in elaborating this time.
Tomlin said it was his first time meeting him when he came for a pre-draft visit on April 10. He’s known Deion for a long time, but the conversation was not about his father. He said it was a normal pre-draft visit to spend time and talk ball. Tomlin got to know him more as an individual. He wanted to see how he processes the game and as only Tomlin could put it ‘articulate his football experience.’
What he saw impressed him.
“The things that stood out were evident in his video,” Tomlin said. “There is a toughness there that doesn’t get talked about enough. There is a competitive spirit there that doesn’t get talked about enough. I know he’s very talented and he’s made a lot of plays for his university and his team, but his intangible qualities displayed on tape were impressive to me.”
What Tomlin said he did, which he does with other quarterbacks, was not to see how he necessarily fits in the Steelers system. He did was watch his Colorado tape and talk about what he did to throw for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns to 10 interceptions while completing 74% of his passes.
Tomlin called it a very productive day.
