TJ Watt isn't exactly a hold out. As we've pointed out, the afternoons that he works with strength coaches on the sidelines he exerts himself more than most of his teammates who are practicing. So, since Watt is not participating in team drills, let's call him a conscientious objector. And if his coach has a problem with it, he's not letting on.
"Not unique at all really," Tomlin answered Tuesday when he was asked about it for the fifth or sixth time this summer. "The negotiation process is going to run its course, some run their course faster than others.
If I remember correctly, Cam Heyward was at less than 100 percent participation when he was in a similar circumstance a short time ago."
Although a quick poll of fellow media members showed that none of us could recall that, Tomlin's point is that he is confident the deal will get done in due time and that Watt will stay in football shape. He is highly conditioned," Tomlin said. "Our strength staff is working with him and he's getting in good work days. The process is running its course."
In the meantime, Tomlin maintains that Watt's absence can actually be a plus for evaluating players at all levels. "Often times you're thinning the herd and you're getting more of an exposure to others," Tomlin explained. "I'm excited about the exposure I've been getting with Melvin Ingram, for instance. Melvin's had an opportunity to work with the first group and gain cohesion with some of those guys."
Still, Ingram comes with a lengthy resume so his spot is secure. It's the rookies and down the liners that can make n impression. Tomlin and his coaches are watching.
"I like to focus my energies on the guys that are working and I'm less concerned about the guys who aren't, whether it's contractually related or injury related," Tomlin said. "At this time of the year I'm all eyes on the guys that are working and one man's misfortune or inconvenience is an opportunity for another."
But just one more thing. Is Watt's individual work something he is doing on his own or is it a directive from the Steeler? "I'm not going to peel back the curtain in regards to that," Tomlin said, "It's unnecessary and all that does is add to the brush fire."
Goodness knows there are too many of those going around these days.
