LATROBE, PA (93.7 The Fan) – What Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said about potentially adding to the wide receiver room is great for the sports talk business at 93.7 The Fan.
“You know, I’ll let you guys speculate on that,” Tomlin said holding in a big smile.
The buzz over the last couple of days has been the saga of 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk wanting more money and it’s reportedly got to the point where San Francisco is going to trade their receiver who had over 1,200-yards and seven touchdowns, two against the Steelers last year.
Reports on Wednesday morning that New England had dropped out of the running which seemed to leave the Steelers and Browns as the two main bidders. It’s a unique situation because Aiyuk is in the last year of his contract and a team would have to agree to a new contract with Aiyuk before trading him, which gives the player leverage to deny a contract with a team the Niners are looking to partner with in a trade.
Tomlin cannot comment directly on Aiyuk as he is still under contract with San Francisco and that would be considered tampering which could lead to a hefty fine or potentially the loss of a draft pick. That meant the question had to be worded vaguely.
There is no time deadline for making a deal, although the Niners probably want to know soon what their roster looks like and trying to plan for the potential that Aiyuk isn’t there.
Tomlin had glowing things to say about a couple of veteran receivers trying to rebuild their careers currently at St. Vincent College.
“I just like the way that group has worked,” Tomlin said. “Getting to know, particularly some of the new veteran guys in that group. Can’t say enough about Van Jefferson and Scotty Miller for example. Guys that have shown high floors in this process. They are really consistent in their performance and they bring it every day. I’ve been pleased with the growth and the work coming from that group.”
