PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers add another veteran to the secondary and someone who can play inside and outside. NFL Network first to report the team signed corner Desmond King, who was released by Houston and once scored a touchdown against the Steelers.
King had a good start with the Chargers after he was selected in the fifth-round out of Iowa in the 2017 draft. The 5'10" corner played in all 32 games with a dozen starts. He also had four interceptions, a pair of fumble recoveries and a forced fumble while being named All-Pro in 2018. He has three defensive touchdowns and a pair of punt return touchdowns going into his seventh NFL season.
The career numbers for King-95 games (53 starts including 25 the last two seasons with Houston), 426 tackles (320 solo), 27 tackles for loss, 33 passes defended, nine interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles. As a punt returner a 9.1 career averages on 101 returns and a 22.5 average on 57 kick returns. He's been named the AFC Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week in his career-that award came after a 73-yard punt return in the fourth quarter in a 2018 in what turned out to be a 33-30 win over the Steelers.
Steelers have yet to announce the signing or the corresponding roster move. He not only could play nickel or corner, but potentially a key veteran on special teams.
