PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy won’t play either of the veteran quarterbacks against the Jets on Friday night, Will Howard will start and then rookie Drew Allar.
“They’re young, Will didn’t get to play last year,” McCarthy said before practice on Wednesday. “Drew is a first-year player. I have two veterans I feel really good about obviously with Aaron and Mason.”
“I saw what I needed to see from Mason last week. I’ve talked highly about Mason really since the spring. I really want to max out the opportunities with Will and Drew.”
McCarthy said he wants to see both play as much as possible not only against the Jets on Friday, but the preseason finale against Buffalo next Thursday.
More Mason Love
“Mason has great command of the offense, just pure on-field, game day,” McCarthy said. “He’s very experienced, strong personality in the locker room. I really like his command, understanding the offense. He’s been in a number of different systems. He’s been asked to do things differently for how we believe the quarterback position is played. He’s done an excellent job.”
The Steelers first-year head coach wouldn’t disclose which other starters might play or rest against the Jets on KDKA-TV Friday night.
