PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Without hockey this year, Robert Morris extended the contract of its hockey coach.
Remaining with the program as they reorganized to resume next season, Colonials rewarding Derek Schooley with a five-year contract.
"I would like to thank Vice President and Athletic Director, Chris King and the entire Robert Morris community for their continued faith in me to lead the relaunch of Colonial Hockey," Schooley said in a statement released by the university. "I am very thankful for the support of our donors, season ticket holders, hockey community and alumni, but we need to continue our positive momentum as we move towards October of 2023. We can't help but be very excited about the next chapter of our program. Our goals will continue to be one of the top teams in our conference and a top 20 nationally ranked program. I can't wait to get going."
The 49-year-old is the only coach in program history, hired in August of 2003. Over his time building a hockey tradition, the Colonials played in six conference tournament championship games. RMU ascended to a first NCAA Tournament in 2014 and won the AHA West Division Championship just last season. His lifetime win percentage is .556.
Schooley is also a two-time Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year.
The Colonials will officially apply for reinstatement to both Atlantic Hockey for the men and College Hockey America (CHA) for the women to resume in the 2022-23 school year.
