Robert Morris University wants to build a new home for its hockey program.
According to a grant application submitted to the state, the university is proposing a $28 million arena that would include locker rooms, officers and amenities for local youth teams.
It's a major change in course from just three years ago, when the university canceled its hockey programs.
They were restored for this season following significant public pushback.
In a statement regarding the project, VP & director of Athletics Chris King says that, "RMU is actively exploring the possibility of building an on-campus ice hockey arena complete with two sheets of ice and seating capacity up to 2,500. The new arena would serve as a vital source of revenue, crucial for the long-term sustainability of their Division I ice hockey programs, whose resurgence has been fueled by fundraising support. Additionally, it would significantly expand local access to top-tier ice facilities for youth and women's hockey programs in our region in combination with the universities existing facilities at the RMU Island Sports Center."
