OAKMONT, PA (93.7 The Fan) – Scottie Scheffler said he battled to a one-over 71 on Friday during the second round of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club and while he can be no closer than seven shots off the lead heading into the weekend, he doesn’t think he’s done.
“The US Open, I don’t think you are ever out of the tournament,” Scheffler said.
“Hopefully be able to put together some good rounds over the weekend and see where I stand. Put together two decent days, by no means is that out of the tournament.”
Scheffler said he battled ‘really hard’ saying he was paying the price for not getting the ball in the right spots. And for as bad as five bogeys, 6 of 14 fairways hit and 7 of 18 greens in regulation were, he said it could have been much worse. The world number one said it was a day where you could have given up based on how difficult the golf course was and how his swing was feeling.
He genuinely feels like if he can put together a couple of better rounds and based on what he’s done the last two seasons, it’s hard to doubt him. Scheffler said he will tee off earlier during round three Saturday and the conditions should be easier. He said this championship isn’t over.
“Overall definitely not out of the tournament,” Scheffler said. “Today was I think with the way I was hitting it was easily a day I could have been going home and battled pretty hard to stay in there. I'm 4-over, but around this golf course I don't think by any means I'm out of the tournament.”
