OAKMONT, PA (93.7 The Fan) – It was Scottie Scheffler’s best round of the 2025 US Open, however it still leaves him outside of the top 10 heading into the final round on Sunday.
It started ominously with a bogey on number one only to answer with a birdie on two with a nice pitch on the short par 4. Scheffler would get a birdie on six, but ended the front nine with bogeys on eight and nine and on nine had to take a drop from a drive in a ditch. The PGA Champion shot a one-under 34 on the back nine to finish where he started at plus 4, but did move up nearly 10 position spots.
“I felt like I had a hard time getting momentum,” Scheffler said. “I made a few silly mistakes out there, a couple three-putts, which is just a killer.”
Scheffler had 30 putts which tied for his most putts in a round during the 2025 US Open, but he did hit it better. This after a long afternoon on the driving range Friday working with his swing coach. He said he left the range not feeling better about his swing.
“Usually over the course of 72 holes you have a couple days where you your swing feels pretty good, a couple days where maybe it's off, and weeks where you win it's maybe you have three or four days of good ball striking and holing some putts, and a week like this week I've had three days where I haven't really had my swing,” Scheffler said. “I've been battling out there and still have a chance, albeit an outside chance, but still a chance.”
Scheffler said overall said he feels like he continues to battle. He said on a course like Oakmont Country Club all are going to make little mistakes. Scheffler said he did a pretty good job of staying patient through the challenges and getting it to even par for the day.
“Am I in the position I had hoped to be after three days? Obviously not,” Scheffler said. “But for the way I've swung it and played the last few days, I feel like I could be a lot worse. So once again, a good job of battling, but hopefully tomorrow will be a little bit more free than a battle.”
“I mean anything can happen. I mean, do I feel like I'm out of the tournament? No. Do I wish I played a little bit better today? Yeah. Of course.”
