PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- "Stop paying attention to every single little thing the Kansas City Chiefs do. It is driving people batty."
That's what Colin Dunlap said to open up the segment at just past 8:00 am Monday on The Fan Morning Show.
The Chiefs fought and clawed their way to a 22-16 win over the 4-win Denver Broncos at home on Sunday night and it left some Steelers fans and observers wondering if Kansas City could be had after all.
"As a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, stop doing this. Especially on Sunday in through Monday. You can't figure them out and they'll drive you absolutely crazy. Tunnel vision, focus, blinders, pay attention to just the black and gold, that's what you need to do," Dunlap continued.
"22-16 they play Denver, then you start the compare and contrast game. 'Man, that was a close game against a bad team. Well the Steelers played the Broncos earlier in the year and…' People in Pittsburgh pay attention to the Steelers and then immediately turn their attention to what is going on with the Chiefs."
Jim Colony offered this: "Well I didn't watch one second of the Chiefs game if that makes you feel any better. There's really no way of comparing them until they play. So they won…you know what? The Steelers are as good as the Chiefs, right? They both won close games against a team that they should have blown out. But they won.
I maintain that if you figure out ways to win games and you don't let games slip away or after you fall behind by double digits against decent teams you're able to fight back and win those games, to me, that's the sign of a really good team."
Chris Mack agreed with the idea of ditching the constant comparisons to the Chiefs.
"I'm not going to parse out, well this team beat that team by a touchdown and this team beat that team by 10…like Jim said, the Steelers keep winning. So I don't care if they win by 1 or 100, if they keep winning and the Chiefs have lost once, then I'm going to still consider the Steelers the better team. That's my right to do so, even though everybody around the country wants to say 'the Chiefs this, the Chiefs that.'
Chris did admit that he likes watching the Chiefs, just to try to figure out and wonder if the Steelers could stop or exploit different things that Kansas City does. It's all with the thought, of course, that these two teams may meet in the playoffs.
Colin said we did this for years with the New England Patriots, constantly comparing them to the Steelers for an eventual playoff matchup and more than half the time, that matchup never even occurred.
The guys also said that this is not just a one-sided conversation, either. They have heard from and talked to Chiefs reporters and radio hosts that are following everything the Steelers are doing in anticipation for a possible matchup.
Chris compared this to a popular meme.
"It's the meme of the guy walking down the street with his girlfriend and the other cute girl walks by and he turns and he makes the face and his girlfriend is looking at him like, 'Hey, what about me!'
The Steelers are the girlfriend right now, Steelers fans are the guy and the Chiefs are the other girl walking by and everybody keeps turning around to look at the Chiefs."
