PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Without starting linebacker Devin Bush for the rest of the season, the Steelers added insurance Sunday night.
The NFL Network reports the Steelers traded a fifth round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft to the New York Jets for middle linebacker Avery Williamson and a 2022 seventh round pick.
The 6'1", 246 pound Williamson had 9 tackles in New York's loss to the Chiefs on Sunday and in the two games prior had a combined 24 tackles.
The Cleveland native missed the 2019 season with an ACL injury in training camp with New York.
Williamson, 28, signed a three-year, 22.5 million dollar free agent contract with the Jets in 2018. A fifth round pick from Kentucky in 2014, Williamson will become an unrestricted free agent after this season ends. Three times in his career, Williamson had over 100 tackles and is on pace for that again this season.
Undrafted middle linebacker Robert Spillane has been starting for Bush, and led the Steelers with 11 tackles, a tackle for loss and returned an interception for a touchdown against Baltimore on Sunday.
Steelers resume on-field practices on Wednesday as they will play at Dallas on Sunday.
