A popular tourist destination in Northern Virginia is ramping up security days after a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad killed Iranian Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani.
Arlington National Cemetery said it will require ID checks at all entrances following the incident. It’s asking for the public’s cooperation, as the increased security “will create longer than usual delays.”
“Due to current conditions, Arlington National Cemetery is increasing its security posture and is implementing 100% ID checks at all entrances,” the cemetery said in a tweet.
All visitors 16 years old or older are now required to show a valid state or government-issued ID before entering.
Funeral attendees and tourists are both considered visitors, the cemetery said.
“Physical Security is everyone’s responsibility,” the cemetery said in a social media post. “We ask you to stay especially vigilant and remember to report any suspicious activity to the JBM-HH Watch Desk.”
Iran said last week it plans to retaliate against the U.S., but D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said there aren’t any immediate threats to the D.C. area.
