A 5-year-old in Texas died from coronavirus complications.
Tagan Drone passed away on Friday, October 20, after testing positive for the novel virus.
Now, the kindergartener’s family is speaking out about their loss and heartbreak.
Her mother, Lastassija White, told KAMR she began noticing a difference in Tagan last Tuesday when she had symptoms of exhaustion.
"She was just sleeping, sleeping, sleeping. That went on until Tuesday and Wednesday. She was still eating and drinking, and then Wednesday night she started throwing up. So that Thursday, that’s when I decided to take her to the ER," White said.
Tagan didn’t present the common symptoms like fever, cough, or sore throat, but she did test positive.
Despite Tagan’s diagnosis, doctors discharged her and said she would be “fine.”
However, White found her daughter “unresponsive” but “still breathing” at around three in the morning.
The parents called 911 for help, but Tagan passed away later that night.
White said that “there’s no way that should have happened” because her daughter was “perfectly healthy.”
Tagan’s father, Quincy Drone, also believes her death could have been prevented.
"This doctor told us that our child would be fine, and our child didn’t even make it 24 hours," he said. "She died within the next 15 hours."
White emphasized that they took all proper precautions amid the pandemic.
“She knew she needed to wear a mask. Like sometimes I would forget my mask and she would say ‘mom, you don’t have a mask!” she told the outlet.
The public health director of Texas, Casie Stoughton, shared her condolences in a press conference, stating: "[We are] heartbroken, and our thoughts and prayers go out to that particular family and any family who has lost someone here in our community. We know that this disease has taken a toll on our community, on our state, on our world and anyone who has lost someone so we are certainly heartbroken."
The parents are speaking out in hopes of spreading awareness to prevent this from happening again.
“We’re trying to bring light, so this doesn’t happen again. We don’t want any parents to feel what… We can’t even tell y’all what we’re feeling right now,” White said.
