John Lennon would have turned 81 years old on October 9 as his former bandmate Paul McCartney took to social media to share a rare black-and-white photo of the two from way back in the day.

The photo shows McCartney and Lennon standing side-by-side as both have their instruments hoisted up on their shoulders like a violin. “Happy Birthday thoughts for John,” McCartney captioned the photo, which you can see right here.

The Beatles are set to be featured in Peter Jackson’s new Disney+ documentary The Beatles: Get Back as a recent preview of the film revealed that the band came incredibly close to firing George Harrison.

What’s more, Lennon almost made the decision to just let Harrison walk away and replace him with none other than Eric Clapton.

The revelation came from previously unheard tapes that will be featured in the upcoming documentary. The discussion came in 1969 as Lennon threatened to permanently let Harrison go after he temporarily quit the band.

Harrison, feeling frustrated that his songs weren’t received as well as Lennon and McCartney’s, was issued an ultimatum. “I think if George doesn’t come back by (next week) we ask Eric Clapton to play,” Lennon quipped.

Of course, Harrison returned to the group as they dove head first back into the recording of their final album Let It Be.

The Beatles: Get Back will premiere in three parts on Disney+ on November 25, 26, and 27.
