Davidson will star in the new film as well as executive-produce the upcoming movie. The announcement of the new film comes on the 20th anniversary of Ramone’s passing, April 15, 2001.
The Netflix biopic is based on the memoir of Joey Ramone, which has the same title and was written by Joey’s brother, Mickey Leigh. Leigh is also one of the movie’s executive producers and the film is being made in full support from Joey Ramone’s estate, with direction from Jason Orley.
Orley and Davidson have worked together in the past, on the film Big Time Adolescence and on Davidson’s standup special, Pete Davidson: Alive from New York. Orley also directed the upcoming rom-com I Want You Back, which stars Gina Rodriguez, Jenny Slate, Charlie Day, Scott Eastwood, and more.
When looking at images of Pete and Joey it’s evident that the two stars share a resemblance and makes for the perfect casting situation.
I Slept With Joey Ramone is being produced by Netflix in partnership with STXFlims. STXFlims’ chairman Adam Fogelson shared, “When you share a bed with someone — and not just a bed, but a childhood, a family, and a lifetime — you know that person better than anybody else. Mickey Leigh not only collaborated with his big brother’s band — he has irreplaceable memories of and insights into Joey Ramone, having supported him when no one else would and witnessed him overcome adversity in the most dramatic way.”
At the moment, Davidson is the only cast member announced for the film and a premiere date has also not been released yet.
