Just in time for Valentine's Day, Netflix is out with a new film that will certainly get couples talking. There's a lot of going on in Malcolm and Marie, starring John David Washington and Zendaya. It's written and directed by Sam Levinson who also works with Zendaya on the hit HBO series Euphoria. The movie, which is filmed in black and white, takes place in the hours following the premiere of Malcolm's new movie; a night when he neglected to thank his girlfriend Marie in his opening night speech. That's bad enough in and of itself, but Marie's life story is also the inspiration for the film, which makes it even worse. As you can imagine, the two of them have a lot to talk about.
The film was shot during the COVID 19 pandemic, thus the small two person cast, the black and white cinematography and a number of others behind the scenes accommodations to prevent the spread of the virus. Real life couples will see a lot to relate to in the dynamics that play out in their relationship. One of the surprise stars of the film is the soundtrack that features wonderful soul classics that not only set the tone for the piece, but also contribute to the narrative. We'll probably be hearing more about this film too because the performances by both Zendaya and John David are stellar.
Malcolm and Marie premiers in theaters were available and on Netflix on February 5th.
