A 33-year-old Southern California woman reportedly killed her 18-month-old daughter, then committed suicide, according to the Claremont Police Department.

Officers went to the 1400 block of Morton Circle at approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday to conduct a welfare check on the household.

Neither mother nor child had been “seen or heard from” for several days, according to a department spokesperson.

"Officers arrived at the apartment and attempted contact by knocking on the front door, but there was no answer. Based on the circumstances, officers entered the apartment to check on the occupant's welfare,” a statement released by Claremont police read.

Inside, officers found the 33-year-old woman and her daughter unresponsive. Paramedics declared both dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been disclosed.

"Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that the mother killed the child and then committed suicide," police said. "There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment and there does not appear to be any outstanding suspects related to the incident."

Investigators believe the weapon used was a knife recovered at the scene.
