Los Angeles (KNX) - A homeless shelter specifically designed for families is nearing completion in Woodland Hills and is expected to open soon.

LISTEN:

'The Woodlands' is located on the site of a former hotel in Woodland Hills, featuring 100 4-bed units. This initiative aims not only to provide housing for families grappling with homelessness, but also to offer essential services.

These services will include three daily meals, job training, after-school tutoring, and life skill classes.

Although there isn't a specified timeframe for how long a family can stay, the ultimate goal is to assist them in transitioning to permanent housing.

KNX reporter Nataly Tavidian recently toured the site and spoke with Laurie Greenfield, an eager future resident who is looking forward to having her own space at The Woodlands for herself and her 10-year-old son.

"it's important for me to share my story... I came across these services I knew nothing about a year ago," Laurie says.

After living for nine years in a converted garage with 'really cheap' rent, Laurie told Nataly that her landlord passed away, forcing her to look for a new place.

Given the current rent prices, Laurie said she had no alternative but to seek help and enter the shelter system, for which she is grateful.

She has been living in transitional housing - with roommates. With services like those provided at The Woodlands, Laurie is optimistic about finding her way to a permanent home soon.
