L.A. County libraries serving free meals to youth this summer

Twenty libraries across Los Angeles County are offering free meals to children and teens through the Lunch at the Library program, it was announced Monday.

The initiative, a partnership between the Los Angeles County Library and the Department of Parks and Recreation, began Monday and runs through Aug. 8. It provides healthy meals for residents 18 and under, officials said.

Meals are available Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at participating locations, depending on the individual site schedule.

No registration or income verification is required, according to county officials. Meals are available on a first come, first served basis and must be eaten at the library.

"This program continues to be a vital service for families in our communities," County Librarian Skye Patrick said in a statement. "We're proud to once again provide a safe, welcoming space where children and teens can access nutritious meals, discover books and stay engaged during the summer months.

The following libraries will offer lunches Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m.: East Los Angeles, Lake Los Angeles, Quartz Hills, Rowland Heights, South Whittier and Woodcrest.

Additionally, these libraries will provides lunches Tuesday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m.: Baldwin Park, Carson, Clifton M. Brakensiek, Compton, El Monte, La Puente (ends August 1), Lancaster, Lawndale, Lomita, Norwalk, Paramount, San Fernando, San Gabriel and Temple City.

According to the county, no lunch will be served on June 19 (Juneteenth) and July 4 (Independence Day), which are official holidays.

Now in its 11th year, the program is part of the federally funded Summer Food Service Program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and managed in California by the Department of Education. It is also supported by the California State Library.

"No family should have to worry about where their next meal will come from, especially when school is out," LA County Parks Director Norma E. García-González said in a statement. "We're proud to help remove barriers so that every child can thrive, learn and enjoy a safe space this summer."
