LAPD sirens are getting an upgrade for distracted drivers

The sirens on top of police cars will be given rumblers, low-frequency pulses that will get drivers' attention through modern-day insulation.

The rumblers create a warbling sound, similar to a bass woofer that can penetrate a car’s insulation to alert the driver of the police. The siren is being installed in all LAPD police cars.

Commander Blake Chow spoke to KNX News’ Pete Demetriou about how hard it is to get the attention of drivers given the amount of distractions there are today.

“The typical police sirens are at a frequency where those sound waves can bounce off the vehicle and not even the driver can hear it,” said Chow.

The sirens also have an automated voice to get drivers to move over to the side.

They will also have a public address system: one person through one channel can be heard from dozens of police cars simultaneously, designed to be used, for example, for evacuations or crowd dispersion.
