Firefighters Wednesday rescued a man who was trapped behind a wall in a church building in downtown Los Angeles, and police were working to determine if he was trying to burglarize the property.

The firefighters were sent to the 1500 block of South Hill Street about 6:15 a.m. on a preliminary report that a man was "trapped inside of the building's ducting system," the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

"Firefighters located a man behind a brick wall inside of (the) commercial building," the LAFD reported. "The man was awake and talking to them, but trapped and unable to free himself. Firefighters breached the wall with sledgehammers and other tools to free the man. Paramedics evaluated him, found him to be in good condition, and he was released into LAPD custody."
