PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The suspect accused of randomly killing five people and injuring four others in Kingsessing Monday night has been arraigned on dozens of charges.

Kimbrady Carriker faced the court Wednesday morning through video conference, arms crossed and stoic as the prosecutor read through the names of the five dead: 15-year-old Daujan Brown, 20-year-old Lashyd Merritt, 29-year-old Dymir Stanton, 31-year-old Joseph Wamah, Jr., and 59-year-old Ralph Moralis.

All of them were shot multiple times.

Around 8:30 Monday night, police said Carriker — wearing a ski mask and a bulletproof vest and armed with two guns and extra magazines of ammunition — opened fire in the neighborhood.

Police said the suspect was observed holding an AR-15 assault rifle at several locations near 56th Street, between Chester and Springfield avenues. The suspect shot aimlessly at occupied cars and people walking on the street, according to Philadelphia Police Staff Inspector Ernest Ransom.

While some officers tended to victims at several locations, others ran toward the sound of additional gunfire. Near the 1600 block of Frazier Street, police spotted Carriker, who continued to fire.

In addition to the rifle, police recovered a 9mm handgun. They said Carriker also had several magazines of ammunition and a police scanner.

The 40-year-old defendant faces dozens of charges, including murder, reckless endangerment, attempted murder and weapons charges, as well as attempted murder, aggravated assault and child endangerment for allegedly shooting at a mother driving her twin toddlers home.

One 2-year-old was shot four times in the leg. The other twin and their mother were both injured by flying glass shards. A 10-year-old was also in the car but was not injured.

A 13-year-old was also shot twice in the leg.

Police said Carriker lived in the neighborhood and has one prior gun conviction.

“None of the victims engaged the suspect or were aware the suspect was going to inflict this act of violence upon them,” said Ransom. Based on the evidence, police believe Carriker carried out the shootings “knowingly and intentionally.”

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month but will likely be delayed as both prosecutors and Carriker’s defense attorney investigate.

In Pennsylvania, there is no bail set for murder, so the defendant will remain behind bars.
