Staff members cheered as a 36-year-old mother who suffered severe complications from COVID-19 held her newborn son for the first time as she was discharged from a Long Island hospital on Wednesday.

Yanira Soriano was admitted to Southside Hospital with pneumonia from COVID-19 earlier this month and had to remain in a medically induced coma on a ventilator for 11 days.

"The baby's only oxygen supply comes from the mom and because the mother's oxygen levels were low there was real concern that the baby could be injured or even die from a lack of oxygen," Schwartz said.

Schwartz said both mom and baby are now doing well.

"Really sort of miraculously over the last several days she started to just get better and better," Schwartz said.

Not a dry eye could be seen as mother and baby were finally reunited Wednesday as Soriano was released from the hospital to go home to be with her husband, newborn baby and three other children.
