Authorities said a maintenance man at a Los Angeles apartment building had a secret past - he was wanted for child rape in Washington.

Christian R. Basham was charged with second-degree child rape in 2008 in Bremerton, according to the Bremerton Police Department. He was released after posting $350,000 bail.

In 2009, a witness said they saw a man who looked like Basham jump off a bridge in the area. Police said there had been a suicide note and his car was found; however, his body was never recovered.

At some point, Basham moved to Los Angeles and went by the name Mark Clemens. He worked as a maintenance man in the building until he was found dead in his apartment in February at the age of 56.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner made the discovery about Basham’s real identity and alerted police in Bremerton.

His next door told KNX News’ Jon Baird that his interactions were positive and there had been discussions about holding a memorial service for him until they found out who he really was.

KNX News has contacted the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner for more information.
